Sunrise on the Bay: Why You Should Set Your Alarm for 5:30am

Apr 18, 2026 Sunrise on the Bay: Why You Should Set Your Alarm for 5:30am

The alarm feels brutal at 5:30am. Then the first light hits the karsts, and you'll be profoundly grateful you got up. A love letter to Halong Bay at dawn.

There are moments on a cruise that you know, even as they happen, that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. Sunrise over Halong Bay is one of them.

The sequence is slow. First, the sky at the horizon shifts from black to deep indigo. Then a band of rose gold appears, silhouetting the nearest karsts in stark relief. Then, suddenly — colour. The water, which was dark and formless, becomes jade. The limestone, pale in daylight, goes gold.

It lasts perhaps twenty minutes before the bay settles into its daytime self. But those twenty minutes are worth the early alarm, the cool air, and the coffee that hasn’t quite brewed yet.

Where to Watch

The upper sun deck is the best vantage point on Le Journey — no obstructions, 270-degree views, and a handrail to lean against while your brain slowly wakes up. Our crew will have hot water ready for Vietnamese drip coffee by 5:45am.
